Uk Psychologist Katja

Dr Emma Smith

I am a Chartered Doctor of Clinical Psychology with over 15 years of experience working within the NHS, as well as in clinical research, local authority services, NGO (non-governmental organisation) and private practice. Within my NHS role, I work within a multi-centre research trial exploring the effectiveness of a new therapy aimed at supporting individuals with type 1 diabetes.

I am a clinical supervisor to psychologists, and I have significant experience in providing teaching, training and consultancy.

In my private practice I work with adult and adolescent clients who experience a wide range of mental and physical health distress including anxiety, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, work related stress, relationship dynamics, diabetes and other long-term physical health conditions.

I work flexibly and creatively, drawing upon a range of evidence-based psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR). I will be striving to provide a safe, containing and compassionate space to support you in exploring your difficulties and helping you work towards your goals.

I am registered with HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council), which upholds high standards in professional codes of practice, qualification and ongoing training.

What client’s say about working with Dr Emma Smith

“I would just like to thank you for recommending Emma to me, she has been amazing and it has been an absolute pleasure speaking to her”.  JB. London

“Emma was recommended to me when I was looking for help with dealing with the sudden onset of anxiety and panic attacks. In the course of working with her, she also identified some other issues, stemming from me being bullied as a child. We used eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing to work on this. She gave me strategies for managing the panic attacks and reducing my associated anxiety.  These approaches have been extremely successful for me. I haven’t experienced panic attack for some time, my anxiety is hugely diminished and any mild symptoms are completely manageable. Addressing the childhood trauma has been a revelation, and has radically changed my relationship with the world and with myself.  Emma is empathetic and approachable and creates a safe space to explore difficult issues.  If I had a problem in the future I would not hesitate to contact her again”.  Ms LL (November 2023)

“Emma was a great help and gave me formulations to help improve my relationship and understand certain thought patterns that were unhelpful. Emma has a very engaging style and I’d personally recommend her”. Ms MV (August 2021)
